As a mom who’s been at this Elf on the Shelf game for over nine years, I get how tedious it can be at times. I’m not ashamed to say, I’m that mom who has forgotten to move our scout elf – Ivy numerous times and had to scramble to move her as soon as I roll out of bed.
So, to help you kick off this season of joy, we’ve created a special Elf on the Shelf return letter free printable, along with some tips to make this year’s Elf’s return experience extra special for your little ones!
Our Family Elf Returns Tradition
My family and I first adopted the Elf on the Shelf tradition in 2015 and since then it has become a cherished part of our families’ holiday celebrations. I bet it’s a treasure in your family as well.
So, on December 1, every year, this little whimsical scout elf is sent from the North Pole to our home to help Santa keep track of who’s naughty and nice.
The elf observes our kiddos – Sophia and Ray during the day and then at night, reports back to Santa.
The joy and anticipation grow each morning as the kids wake up to find out the new spot where their elf has landed.
The Number 1 Rule of The Elf on the Shelf
This might be a bit difficult for the littles. But the rule is no one can touch the elf. Because if someone touches the elf, the elf will lose their magic and won’t be able to fly back to the North Pole to report to Santa.
Free Printable Return Letter
To make the return of your elf even more magical, we’ve designed a free printable letter for you to use. This letter can be customized with your child’s name and is a delightful way to announce the elf’s return. Here’s how to make the most of it:

- Personalize It: Write your child’s name on the letter to make it feel even more special. You can also add a small note about the elf’s adventures at the North Pole or a reminder to be on their best behavior.
- Presentation Matters: Roll up the letter and tie it with a festive ribbon or place it in a small envelope. You could even sprinkle some glitter around to add to the magic!
- Setting the Scene: Place the letter next to the elf when they arrive. You might want to set up a cozy little scene with holiday decorations, a mug of hot cocoa, or a tiny chair for the elf to sit on.

Additional Elf Ideas
Beyond the return letter, here are some fun ideas to keep the spirit alive throughout the season:
1. Elf Arrival Party
Host a small “Elf Arrival” party with hot cocoa, cookies, and festive music. Get the kids involved in making signs to welcome their elf back!
2. Daily Elf Mischief
Every night, reposition your elf in a new, fun, or mischievous spot. From getting into the candy jar to reading a book with other toys, to elf on the shelf shoe train, the possibilities are endless! If you can’t come up with ideas, search Pinterest or YouTube for inspiration.
3. Elf Kindness Calendar
Create a calendar of kindness acts that your elf can encourage your children to do throughout December. It could be as simple as helping a sibling or donating a toy.
4. Write Letters to Santa
Involve the elf in the letter-writing process. Encourage your children to write a letter to Santa and let the elf deliver it to the North Pole!
5. Good Deeds Reminder
Have your elf bring along a checklist of good deeds for the kids to complete. This not only makes the experience interactive but also teaches the value of kindness and generosity.
6. Elf On The Shelf Stories Countdown
This involves a little bit more planning whereby your Elf will bring a new story (you can print PDF stories online or purchase books). You will read the story each night to your kiddos and they will write the story that was read to them down on a printable PDF (also included in your free download.)
Conclusion
The Elf on the Shelf tradition is a wonderful way to bring magic and excitement into your home during the holiday season.
