Remembrance Day is an important day to remind our kiddos to honor the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives in service to their country.
Engaging your students in meaningful activities will foster empathy and gratitude while helping them understand the significance of Remembrance Day.
Here are some thoughtful activities you can do at home or in the classroom to commemorate this day with your kiddos.
Remembrance Day Activities For Kids
1. Storytime
Reading age-appropriate stories about wartime, peacemaking, and heroism can help kids better understand the significance of Remembrance Day. Developing empathy for the brave soldiers and the courage to be a patriotic citizen.

After reading the stories have discussions with your students encouraging them to share their thoughts and ask questions.
2. Create a Tribute
As a class, you all can create a huge poppy and display it on your class windows or school hallways. Alternatively, you can download and print coloring pages for your students to color. Once they are done you can hang these on your classroom’s bulletin boards or windows.
3. A Moment of Silence
Discuss with your students beforehand the national moment of silence that takes place at 11 a.m. on Remembrance Day. Explain to your students the importance of this moment and encourage them to observe it respectfully by thinking of the brave soldiers or saying a prayer. Then on the day off participate in the national moment of silence as a class.
4. Family Stories
If you have students whose family members have served in the military and are willing to come and share insights with your students make sure to extend an invitation to them.
Often time personal connections add a lot more meaning to situations for children.
5. Learn About Poppies
Chances are – your kiddos have noticed poppies everywhere in the last few weeks leading up to Remembrance Day. Spend time educating your students about why the poppy is a symbol of remembrance and its representation.
Make poppy crafts together using red paper or tissue paper.
6. Write Thank You Notes To Veterans
Encourage your students to express gratitude and appreciation to veterans or those currently serving in militaries by writing thank you to them – thanking them for their bravery and hard work fighting for freedom and their country.
7. Watch Documentaries
Find age-appropriate documentaries on YouTube that depict stories of wartime, veterans reflecting on the time they served in the army, bravery, heroism, etc.
Watch the documentary together with your kiddos and then have an open discussion on their thoughts and feelings and things they’ve learned from the documentary.
8. Worksheets and Activities
You can also create worksheets and activities such as writing prompts, coloring pages, puzzles, etc for your students to engage in on Remembrance Day or days leading up to this day.
