Okay, my friend, let’s now go deeper into these worksheets!
X Is For Tracing Worksheet
I highly recommend starting with this worksheet first.
On this page, your preschooler will trace the sentence – ” X is for” followed by four X words – Xmas, Ximenia, X-ray, and Xulophone.
Once your child is done tracing these words. They can have fun coloring the images associated with each word.
Since letter X can be abstract, this page will give your preschooler concrete images and help them connect each word to its beginning sound.
I’m sure you would agree that it’s a fantastic opportunity to build your child’s vocabulary.
Encourage your preschooler to say each word aloud as they trace and color. You can also take it a bit further and start conversations by asking your child these questions:
-
“What holiday is Xmas short for?”
-
“What is an X-ray used for?”
-
“Can we find a picture of a ximenia fruit?”
This makes learning interactive and conversational, which helps kids retain what they’re learning.
Build a Letter X Flip Book
After your preschooler has become familiar with the words and images on the main page, it’s time to create a hands-on flip book!
These three pages contain six rectangles total, with two per page.
Each rectangle includes:
-
A traceable X word
-
A fun image to color
The flip book words include:
-
Xylophone
-
X-ray fish
-
X-ray
-
Ximenia
-
Xmas
These activities give children the opportunity to review X words, practice tracing, have fun coloring, and build a beautiful letter X of the week flipbook.
Here’s some suggested ways as to how you can use the flip book pages:
-
Have your preschooler trace the word and color the image.
-
Cut out the rectangles together.
-
Staple or glue them to create a mini Letter X flip book.
By the end of the week, they’ll have their very own creation to read aloud or display. Plus, they’ll feel confident in their understanding of the letter X.
What Your Preschooler Will Learn?
Although letter X can be challenging, this printable pack introduces it in an approachable, age-appropriate way. While working through these activities, your child will practice:
-
Letter recognition (uppercase and lowercase X)
-
Beginning sound awareness
-
Vocabulary development with lesser-known X words
-
Handwriting practice through tracing
-
Sentence structure awareness with repetitive phrasing
-
Confidence building through making and reading their own flip book
These skills are foundational for early reading and writing success, and they’re all built into these simple printable activities.
Suggested Weekly Plan for Using the Letter X Printables
Not sure how to structure your letter X activities?
Here’s a simple 5-day plan:
Monday – Trace & Talk – Use the main tracing worksheet to introduce the letter X and its sound. Trace the words together, say them aloud, and color the pictures.
Tuesday to Thursday – Flip Book Practice – Each day, work through 1 to 2 rectangles. Let your preschooler:
-
Trace the X word
-
Say the X word
-
Color the image
-
Talk about what the word means (with your help!)
This approach keeps learning short and focused, which is ideal for preschool attention spans.
Friday – Assemble the Flip Book – Cut out the rectangles and help your child staple them into a flip book. Let them read it to you, or a friend, or a family member. It’s a great way to review and celebrate all they’ve learned!
Extra Letter X Words for Preschoolers
Here are more X words you can talk about or use in creative ways during the week:
-
Xerox (you can explain it means to make a copy)
-
Xylem (great for plant-themed learning)
-
X-axis (in very basic math or graphing)
-
Xenops (a type of bird!)
-
Xenon (for fun science-themed days)
While many of these are more advanced, they’re great for expanding curiosity and introducing new sounds or ideas.
Letter X Activity Ideas
To make your letter of the week even more engaging, try these simple extension activities:
Make an X-Ray Craft
Use white paint or chalk on black paper to draw bones or create “x-ray hands.” Label it “X is for X-ray.”
Play a Xylophone
If you have a toy xylophone, explore the sounds it makes. Let your preschooler play and say the word aloud: “X is for xylophone!”
Color an X-Ray Fish
Print or draw a picture of an X-ray fish, a cool real-life animal that preschoolers love learning about.
Decorate a Mini Xmas Tree
Let your preschooler decorate a small paper tree while talking about how Xmas starts with X.
These activities tie directly into the words in your flip book, reinforcing vocabulary through movement and creativity.
