What You’ll Need for the Scavenger Hunt?
Here are the items included in our St. Patrick’s Day scavenger hunt:
Green Clover Leaves – There are two options you can consider here. You can choose to use printable cutout clover leaves, or find fake green clover leaves and hide them around your home or classroom.
Leprechaun Hat – Pick up a small leprechaun hat at your local dollar store or hide a cutout of a leprechaun hat.
Gold Coins – I like to use chocolate gold coins for these. It’s a nice treat for the kids afterward. Haha. Alternatively, you can use plastic gold coins as treasures to find.
Rainbow Colors – Print and cut out a rainbow to hide.
St. Patrick’s Day Decorations – Hide banners and other St. Patrick’s Day decorations from your local dollar store.
Leprechaun Footprints – You can create footprints with green washable paint or cut them out of paper and place them along the route.
Irish Flags: You can use small Irish flags or print and cut them out to include in the hunt.
Pot of Gold – A small pot filled with gold-wrapped chocolates or candies serves as the ultimate treasure.
Rainbow Trail – Create a rainbow trail using colored ribbons or streamers leading to the next clue.
Green Balloons – Tie green balloons to certain locations or use them to mark spots where clues are hidden.
Leprechaun Boot – You can find one at your local dollar store or print out a picture of green boots.
How to Set Up Your St. Patrick’s Day Scavenger Hunt?
Here are some ways you can set up an unforgettable scavenger hunt for your kids:
1. Choose a Location – Decide whether your scavenger hunt will take place indoors, outdoors, or both. Consider the size of the area and ensure it’s safe and accessible for kids.
2. Prepare the Items – Gather all the items listed above. If you’re creating cutouts (e.g., leprechaun hats, rainbows, or clover leaves), print them ahead of time and make sure they’re sturdy enough to withstand handling.
3. Create Clues – Write or print fun, rhyming clues to guide your kids from one item to the next.
For example, you can say something along the lines of:
For the Leprechaun Hat: “A tiny hat for a tiny man, find it if you can!”
And For the Pot of Gold: “At the end of the rainbow, you’ll find something bold!”
4. Hide the Items – Place the items in creative hiding spots around your chosen location. Use the clues to create a trail that leads participants to each item. For younger children, keep hiding spots obvious. For older kids, add more challenging locations.
5. Set Up the Rainbow Trail – Use green and gold ribbons or streamers to create a “rainbow trail” that leads participants to the next clue or the final treasure.
6. Add Extra Fun – Incorporate additional festive elements like green lights, St. Patrick’s Day music, or themed snacks to enhance the experience.
Tips for a Successful Scavenger Hunt
Here are some things to keep in mind to create a successful scavenger hunt:
Tailor to your Kids’ Age Group – Adjust the difficulty of clues and hiding spots based on the age and abilities of your kids or students.
Use a Timer – For a competitive twist, (again keeping your kids’ ages in mind) set a timer to see who can complete the hunt the fastest.
Encourage Teamwork – Pair up your students or kids to foster teamwork, friendship building and cooperation.
Celebrate the Finish – Have a small prize or certificate ready for everyone who completes the hunt. (Now, that I typed this line – I’m thinking – perhaps I can create a set of free certificates for you. Huh. We will see! Lol.)
Why a Scavenger Hunt is Perfect for St. Patrick’s Day?
I’m a believer that kids learn best through play! A St. Patrick’s Day scavenger hunt will combine festive fun with educational benefits.
Here’s what it can encourage for your kids:
Critical Thinking – Solving clues will boost your kids’ problem-solving skills.
Physical Activity – Running around to find items will keep your children’s kids active.
Teamwork – Working together fosters collaboration and communication.
Holiday Spirit – Kids learn about St. Patrick’s Day traditions in a hands-on way.
