How to Teach Preschoolers Subtraction?
Teaching subtraction to your preschooler can be a joyful experience when approached with creativity and patience.
I’m, sure you will agree with me that preschool-age children learn best through hands-on activities and play.
So here are some steps to introduce subtraction effectively to your preschooler:
Start with Real-Life Examples – Your little one will understand subtraction better when it’s tied to everyday experiences. For example, during snack time you can say to your child – “You have 5 crackers on your plate. If you eat 2, how many are left?” Another idea is during toy clean-up. You can say to your child – “We have 8 blocks. Let’s put away 3. How many blocks are still on the floor?”
Use Visual Aids and Manipulatives – Hands-on tools like counters, blocks, or even toys can make subtraction tangible. For instance – place 7 toy cars on the table, then remove 3 cars and ask, “How many cars are left?” Encourage your child to touch and count the remaining objects.
Introduce the Subtraction Symbol – Once your child is comfortable with taking objects away, introduce the subtraction sign. Use simple language like – “This sign (-) means we’re taking away.” Or, Write 6 – 2 = 4 and explain that the equation shows that we had 6 blocks on the floor and since we packed 2 blacks away. We are left with 4 blocks.
Incorporate Stories – Storytelling brings subtraction to life. For example – five little ducks went out one day, over the hill and far away. One duck came back. How many ducks didn’t return?” Encourage children to act out the story using toys or their fingers.
Other Fun Ways to Teach Subtraction to Preschoolers?
1. Play Subtraction Games – I’m a believer that kids learn best through play! You can create a game by setting up 10 bottles. Let your child roll a ball, and count how many bottles she knocked down and how many remain. Another fun game that comes to my mind is showing your child let’s say 5 cars. Count the 5 cars with him. Then hide 3 under a cloth and ask your child – “How many cars can you still see?”
2. Use Songs and Rhymes – Subtraction songs, like “Five Little Monkeys,” can make learning fun and engaging for your little one. Sing together while showing visual representations of objects being removed.
3. Explore Nature – Nature offers excellent opportunities for subtraction! Go on a nature walk with your preschooler. Collect 6 leaves, take away 3, and count the rest together. Or, perhaps look at birds on a tree. And ask questions such as – ” If one bird flies away how many will be left?”
Why Teach Preschoolers Subtraction?
Subtraction is a fundamental math skill that helps children:
Develop Problem-Solving Skills – Understanding subtraction will enable your preschooler to solve everyday problems, like sharing toys or splitting snacks.
Build a Strong Math Foundation – Early exposure to subtraction can prepare your preschooler for more advanced math concepts, such as addition, multiplication, and division.
Enhance Critical Thinking – Subtraction encourages logical reasoning as children determine how many are left after taking some away.
Boost Confidence – Mastering subtraction will give your child a sense of accomplishment, motivating them to tackle new challenges.
How Do You Explain Subtraction to Preschoolers?
When explaining subtraction to your preschooler, simplicity is key. Use clear and relatable language. Such as:
- “Subtraction means taking something away.”
- “If you have 5 apples and you share 2 with a friend, you’ll have 3 apples left.”
Visual demonstrations are invaluable. For example:
- Draw 4 clouds on a whiteboard. Erase 1 and ask, “How many clouds are left?”
- Show subtraction with physical objects, like removing blocks from a stack, or use some of the examples I shared with you above.
How Do You Introduce the Concept of Subtraction?
Start by using the term “take away” before introducing the word “subtraction.”
So for instance you can consider:
Hands-On Activities – Begin with a small group of objects. Remove a few and ask, “How many are left?”
Relatable Scenarios – Use everyday contexts like sharing snacks, taking cookies from a jar, and sharing toys.
Interactive Worksheets – Our free preschool math subtraction worksheets are an excellent way to reinforce subtraction concepts through practice.
Gradual Introduction – Start with simple problems (e.g., 3 – 1) and gradually increase complexity as your preschooler gains confidence.
By making subtraction fun and interactive, you will be setting the stage for lifelong learning and curiosity.
