Today, I’m super excited to share a set of four free printables that will introduce your child to the letter Y through tracing, coloring, and flip-book building.
I created these activities for you to help your preschoolers reinforce letter recognition, handwriting, and beginning Y sounds.
Okay, so let’s now take a closer look at what’s inside and how you can use these resources to help your preschooler explore the letter Y.

Like I mentioned earlier, this free printable set includes 4 ready-to-use PDF worksheets:
-
1 tracing worksheet with “Y is for…” followed by four traceable Y words and pictures to color.
-
3 flip book pages, each with two rectangles that feature a traceable Y word and an image to color
This activity pack is ideal for:
-
Letter of the week units
-
Preschool and Pre-K literacy centers
-
Homeschooling routines
-
Quiet time trays or morning work
The structure is simple, consistent, and developmentally appropriate, making it perfect for early learners.
Y Is For Tracing and Coloring Worksheet
You can start your week with this introductory tracing page, where your child or students will:
-
Trace the phrase “Y is for…” followed by 4 Y words – yak, yogurt, yo-yo, and yam.
Each word is paired with a large image, making it easier for kids to connect the /y/ sound to something familiar or fun.
After tracing the words, your preschooler can color each image to make it their own. You could steal an opportunity here to build your preschooler’s vocabulary. You can also get your kids talking by asking:
-
“What sound does a yak make?”
-
“Do you like yogurt for breakfast?”
-
“Can you play with a yo-yo?”
I truly believe that little questions like these can make learning interactive and meaningful for our little ones.
Letter Y Flip Book Printables
The next 3 PDFs included in this packet come with 2 rectangular boxes with a sentence that reads Y is for, followed by a Y word and a picture for your child to color.
You can use these as they are, or you can cut the rectangles out and create a Letter Y of the week flip book for your child.
The flip book words include:
-
Yacht
-
Yogurt
-
Yawn
-
Yo-yo
What Skills Will Your Preschooler Build?
This Letter Y printable pack supports a wide range of early learning goals in a playful and developmentally appropriate way.
Such as:
-
Letter recognition (uppercase and lowercase Y).
-
Beginning sound awareness (identifying the /y/ sound).
-
Vocabulary development.
-
Word-image association.
-
Letter formation and handwriting.
-
Creative expression through coloring.

Confidence and independence through creating their own flip book.
These activities are designed to lay a strong literacy foundation in a way that’s both effective and enjoyable.
Suggested Weekly Plan for Letter Y Printables
Not sure how to implement these activities with your child? Don’t worry! I’ve put together a plan that you can consider stealing.
➤ Monday – Letter Introduction – Use the first worksheet in this packet to introduce the letter Y. Say each word aloud alongside your child. Then encourage them to trace the words. Once they are all done, they can color the images. You can also go a step further and talk about the sound the letter Y makes while brainstorming more words that begin with that sound.
➤ Tuesday to Thursday – Flip Book Panels – Complete a rectangle each day. Have your preschooler:
-
Read the “Y is for…” sentence
-
Say the word aloud, then trace it
-
Color the image
-
After you can talk about what it is or means.
These small daily sessions are great for building confidence without overwhelming your child.
➤ Friday – Flip Book Assembly – Help your preschooler cut out all the flip book rectangles and staple them into a mini book. Then you both can read the book together.
