What is Probability? (A Simple Explanation For Kids!)
Probability is the chance or likelihood that something will happen.
In everyday life, we use probability to make decisions, predict events, and understand the world around us.
Here are some examples you can share with your kids:
- Is it likely or unlikely that it will rain today?
- Do you think it’s possible or impossible to see a unicorn in the backyard today? What about a dragon?
- Will the sun rise tomorrow evening? (impossible)
By introducing probability in a fun and interactive way to our kindergarteners, we can help them develop early critical thinking and reasoning skills. Which can support early learning in math and science.
How to Teach Probability to Kindergarteners?
Not sure how you can effectively teach probability to your kindergarteners?
Teaching probability to your kindies should be play-based and interactive.
Here are some engaging ways you can consider implementing when introducing probability concepts:
Use Everyday Situations – Ask your child questions like, “What do you think will happen ?” Or “Do you think this is likely or unlikely?”
Here are some examples for you to consider:
Is it possible or impossible for it to snow in the summer?
What’s the probability of you picking a red candy from a jar filled with only red candies?
Hands-On Activities – Your little one would have sooooo much fun with these hands-on activities!
- Coin Toss – Flip a coin and talk about heads or tails. Which one do you think will come up?
- Rolling a Die – Ask your kiddo: “What are the chances of rolling a six?”
- Colorful Counters in a Bag- Put different colored counters in a bag. Then have your child pull one and predict what they might get.
- Pick a crayon from a pack – Ask your child to close their eyes and pick a crayon. Then, ask them how likely or unlikely they will get a certain color from the pack.
Use Visuals and Sorting Activities – Show pictures and have your child sort them into possible, impossible, and sometimes categories.
Here are a couple of examples:
Is it possible or impossible for a cat to fly? (impossible)
If you roll a dice, is it possible or impossible to get, let us say, three? (possible)
Do you wear a raincoat when you go outside? (sometimes) (This will depend on where you live, though.)
Free Kindergarten Probability Worksheets
These 6 free worksheets are designed to reinforce probability concepts through fun, simple exercises that your kindergartener would love and enjoy!
1. Always, Sometimes, Never Worksheet – Kids will read or listen to a simple sentence and then cut and paste the correct answer based on whether it happens always, sometimes, or never. For example, sometimes, I eat pizza for dinner. A cow will never fly. I always brush my teeth.
2. Likely or Unlikely Cut-and-Paste Activity – Your kiddos will cut and paste likely or unlikely to different scenarios. For example. Finding a starfish at the beach. (Likely). Seeing a pink elephant at the zoo. (Unlikely).
3. Possible or Impossible – Your kindies will have fun as they color if it’s possible or impossible to get green carrots from a bunch of only green carrots.
4. Gumball Guessing – This is a fun activity where your kindies will have to color a set of gumballs and then guess what color they are more likely to pick.
How To Incorporate These Worksheets Into Your Lesson Plan?
1. Start with a Discussion – I like to begin by asking simple probability questions. Such as “Will you go to bed tonight? (Likely). Do you think it will snow/ rain tomorrow? (Of course, this answer will vary depending on the season and where you are located.)
2. Do a Hands-On Activity First – Before jumping into the worksheets, introduce probability with a hands-on game. Perhaps flipping a coin, picking a crayon or candy from a jar, or maybe even rolling a dice.
3. Use the Worksheets for Independent Practice – After the discussion and activity, give your child or students the probability worksheets to reinforce learning.
4. Wrap Up with a Fun Exit Ticket – Ask your child to share possible, impossible, sometimes, likely, and unlikely statements before wrapping up.
