So, with that said, in this blog post, I will be sharing with you three fun and engaging fine motor skills activities specifically designed to strengthen your 3-4 year olds fine motor skills.
These activities include tracing lines, cutting and pasting, and scissor skills. But before I share these free fine motor skills activities with you. Let’s take a look at what fine motor skills are and what milestones your child in this age range should be reaching.
What is a Fine Motor Skill Activity for a 3-4 Year Old?

Fine motor skills involve the use of small muscles in the hands, fingers, and wrists to complete precise tasks.
Activities that encourage children to practice fine motor movements can help strengthen these muscles and improve their ability to manipulate objects with control. Think snapping Lego pieces together.
For 3-4 year olds, fine motor skill activities should be engaging, hands-on, and developmentally appropriate.
Here are some examples of fine motor activities I’ve put together for you:
Grasping and pinching – Using tongs or tweezers to pick up small objects.
Tracing and drawing – Following lines, letters, or shapes. I’ll be sharing tons of these worksheets with you below.
Cutting with scissors – Cutting along straight, zig-zag, and curved lines. I’ve included a free set of scissors skills worksheets for you below.
Pasting and gluing – Cutting and pasting images, shapes, etc. Again. I’ll also be sharing a set of free cut-and-paste worksheets for toddlers below.
Threading and lacing – Stringing beads onto a shoelace or using lacing cards.
Playdough activities – This is a favorite among all toddlers I know. Rolling, pinching, and shaping Play – dough can help build hand strength. And let’s not forget creativity as well!

What Fine Motor Skills Should a 3-4 Year Old Have?
By the ages of 3 and 4, children should be developing key fine motor skills that enable them to perform basic self-help and pre-writing tasks.

- Holding and using a crayon or pencil with a tripod grasp.
- Tracing simple lines and shapes
- Snipping with scissors and cutting along straight lines
- Turning pages of a book one at a time
- Building towers with small blocks.
- Manipulating small objects like beads, buttons, and puzzle pieces
- Using utensils to eat and pouring liquids with some control
- Zipping and buttoning clothing with assistance

2. Cut and Paste Activities
Cut and paste activities enhance hand strength, coordination, and problem-solving skills. They also teach toddlers how to manipulate objects and follow step-by-step instructions.
All you need to get started is child-safe scissors, construction paper or you can snag my free printable cut-and-paste worksheets. Glue sticks or school glue. Another option is if you have magazines you no longer need lying around your home. Give them to your toddlers for cutting out pictures. I bet they will have tons of fun doing so!
3. Scissor Skills: Cutting Along Lines
Very similar to cut and paste. But in this case, your kids will just be cutting along lines.
Cutting along lines will refine your toddler’s hand strength, precision, and coordination. Helping them gain control over their hand movements, which is crucial for writing skills later on.
