I’ve thoughtfully created these printable worksheets for children experiencing loss, to be a gentle, supportive means to help them process difficult emotions.

These grief and loss journaling activities are designed to help kids express feelings that may be hard for them to put into words.
As someone who lost a sibling and my dad at a very early age in life, I know firsthand how grief can be one of the most difficult emotions a child can experience.
When children lose someone they love—whether it’s a family member, a pet, or someone important in their life—they often struggle to understand their feelings or express what they are going through.
Unlike adults, children may not always have the words to explain sadness, confusion, or anger.
Instead, these emotions may show up through behavior changes, withdrawal, or questions about what happened.
As parents, teachers, and/or caregivers, it can feel overwhelming trying to support a child through grief while navigating your own emotions as well.
And that’s exactly why I created these Grief and Loss Worksheets for Kids—to give children a safe, supportive way to explore their feelings and begin understanding their grief.

Why Supporting Children Through Grief Matters
It’s no surprise that children process grief very differently from us adults. Some kids may ask many questions, while others may become quiet or appear unaffected at first. (My youngest brother was very silent when my eldest brother passed.)
Of course, every child will process grief differently. Some will be sad for a long time and cry constantly. Avoid eating, go into isolation. Develope anger, frustration, ask repeated questions, perhaps blame themselves, or feel betrayed.
And, in all fairness, all those big feelings are welcome and ok to feel them, and at the same time, helping our kiddos express these emotions in healthy ways is an important part of their emotional development.
Research and counseling practices show that creative activities such as drawing, writing, and reflection can help children understand and process their feelings more safely.
This is why social-emotional learning activities can be incredibly valuable when supporting children through difficult experiences.
How Grief Worksheets Help Children Process Loss

Many children struggle to talk openly about grief.
Worksheets provide a structured and gentle way for kids to express their emotions without pressure.
Instead of asking difficult questions directly, the worksheets I’m sharing with you will allow children to:
-
reflect on their feelings
-
remember loved ones in meaningful ways
-
identify people who support them
-
Practice calming techniques when emotions feel overwhelming
These activities create a safe emotional outlet, helping children feel seen, heard, and supported.

Encourage emotional expression – Let children know it’s okay to feel sad, angry, confused, or even happy at times.
Maintain routines – Daily routines can help children feel safe and stable during emotional times.
Listen more than you speak – Sometimes children simply need a safe space to share their thoughts and feelings.
